“All research was done as shonkily as possible, mostly via the internet and a free copy of the Bible I got one time.”
Occasionally I’m asked for an Australian take on the Christmas story, there are very few books by Australians exploring the story with an Australian sense of humour. Enter this delightfully amusing book by Andrew Marlton (AKA FTOTM) from Crikey.
TFDOTM explores some of the oddities of the Christmas story from Luke and Matthew with a sense of quirky humour and gorgeous illustrations and a generosity that still manages to takes the stories with serious wonder that will have you quietly giggling while also immersing yourself in the wonder of the story.
The book asks some serious questions as TFDOTM takes you on a journey through the story that many are familiar with but probably don’t know too much about or, like Andrew have some niggling questions like:
- Why are there “conflicting” stories?
- How has the story been formed over time?
- Was there a donkey?
- Where did Santa Claus come from?
- Was Jesus born on December 25?
- What do angels look like?
- Why do we use christmas trees?
and many more…
Probably not a great book for the more conservative end of the family during Christmas but it’s still a great Australian journey through the Christmas stories with some beautiful and festive illustrations.
