The Brothers Quibble is the latest illustrated tale from Neighbours alumni Aaron Blabey.
Much like his previous stories The Brothers Quibble is full of quirky beautiful and playful images that go hand in hand with the simple, and slightly all too familiar tale of sibling rivalry.
I say familiar, not because this tale has been told before, but because it’s been lived before over and over again by families that go from one child to two children.
Spalding is an only child, he rules the roost and has the undivided attention and love of his parents, he even has a crown that shows everyone his place in the world.
That is… Until his mum and dad introduce him to Bunny, his new baby brother. With Spalding’s world suddenly collapsing around him he sets up a plan to cement his place back at the head of the family… Bunny must go.
Spalding sets out on a wild and unrelenting plan to remove his brother from the family but his parents, now unwilling victims of his plan and also protector of Bunny manage to keep some sort of protection bubble around the poor kid until, one day he grows up, and it seems all those years of bullying has given the kid some skills.
Yet, what makes this story so touching is that although the brotherly relationship has been rocky Bunny still seems to love his big brother, but will this love ever be reciprocated?
The illustrations are cool, the story quirky and fun, the written word rhyming like a poetry pro…
Well worth checking out, an instant favourite.
Biblically… if you’re exploring a story about sibling rivalry (Jacob/Esau, Joseph & his brothers, Cain & Abel) this would be perfect…
